Schnitzel in general means a thin slice of meat fried in fat and commonly, the meat is breaded before frying.

It originally came from Germany and in the country, the term schnitzel means meat cutlets. However, the term schnitzel generally means all types of breaded, fried, and flat pieces of meat.

Depending on the region, it can be served with mushroom sauce, French fries, and a lemon slice on the side.

But did you know that there’s this specific schnitzel that is a country’s national food? Yes, you read that right! It’s the Wiener Schnitzel. It’s one of the national dishes of Austria and is one of the most known specialties of Viennese cuisine. It is made of veal (calves’ meat) and garnished with a slice of lemon and potatoes on the side.

European’s Take on The Chicken Schnitzel

In European countries like Hungary, Bulgaria, Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, and France, it is a popular dish that is often prepared on Sunday family gatherings and on special occasions. The fried meat is served with fries, mashed potatoes, or rice. Other alternatives are green peas, bread, and pickles.

 

Chicken Schnitzel Variations in Asia

In Iran, schnitzel is a very popular dish. It was thought to be introduced during the World War 1. It is usually thicker, bigger, spicier, and fried with a crispier breading that the standard schnitzel. It is customary served with lemon, French fries, and several boiled vegetables.

Israel’s version is typically made of chicken and or turkey, following the dietary Kashrut Laws, which forbid pork. Vegetable oil is also the recommended type of oil to be used. Before frying, the schnitzel is coated with a mixture of beaten eggs and breadcrumbs, spiced paprika, and sesame seeds. The Israeli schnitzel is commonly served with mashed potatoes, fries, pasta or rice, accompanied by hummus, ketchup, or vegetable salad. There are also several restaurants that serve schnitzel in a pita bread alongside hummus.

In Japan, it is also called as katsu or meat cutlet. Tonkatsu is often served as a complement to ramen or udon, or curry and rice. Different meat variations for schnitzel or katsu in Japan include pork fillet (hirekatsu), chicken (chicken katsu), beef (gyukatsu), ham (hamukatsu), and minced meat (menchi-katsu).

 

South American’s Input of the Chicken Schnitzel

In South American countries such as Argentina, it is widely known as milanesa.

They usually add tomato paste, mozzarella cheese, and ham. A thin slice of beef, chicken, veal, or sometimes pork, it is dipped into beaten eggs, seasoned with salt and other spices. Some fry the meat slices, and some people bake them in the oven as a healthier alternative.
